NSA member birth and marriage announcements and obituaries from 2006:
Greta Strong — On February 26th, Greta passed away peacefully and without pain, from complications associated with emphysema, at her home in Tempe, AZ. She was born in New York City, June 11, 1913, and moved to AZ in the early 1980’s to be near her son, Larry Rand. In the 1950’s and 60’s, she was an avid ‘kitchen table’ Scrabble player. In the late 1990’s, when she was in her mid-80’s, she began competing at the Mesa Scrabble Club and in Phoenix One Day tournaments. She loved life and the game of Scrabble, which helped keep her mind sharp to the very end.
— Larry Rand
Dennis Kaiser passed away on March 8th after a very long and courageous struggle with prostate cancer. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Paz. Dennis and Barbara were friends for over 20 years. He stayed at her homes in Phoenix during the tournaments. On a personal note, my tournament record against Dennis, over a ten year period, was 11-12. We played countless more games at club and for entertainment. Dennis never ceased to amaze me with his word knowledge and his willingness to help other players. He loved the game and will be missed by many.
— Larry Rand and Barbara Van Alen
