Massachusetts makes educational history again with first state-wide School SCRABBLE® Championship

From educator Horace Mann to Harvard, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has always been a leader when it comes to learning. Educational history is in the making again as the National SCRABBLE® Association and Milton Bradley Company, a division of Hasbro, have announced plans to host the first-ever Massachusetts School SCRABBLE® Championship in Springfield this November. It's expected that as many as 10,000 students from all over the state will compete in the early rounds of the event. The Massachusetts School SCRABBLE® Championship will become the prototype for a future National School SCRABBLE® Championship.

Since the School SCRABBLE® Program launched in 1992, over half a million students have been playing SCRABBLE® in school throughout the country. Educators report that the game is an excellent catalyst in their classrooms, citing improved vocabulary, dictionary usage, math skills, spatial relationship and teamwork among the program's benefits.

After three successful school competitions in Springfield, the tournament structure is ready to grow to the next level. Two-member teams throughout the state representing grades 6 through 8 have been invited to compete. The top 100 players will go head-to-head at the Championship, vying for prizes and the title of State Champions.
