They're memorizing the two- and three-letter word lists before whiffle ball games and studying the Official SCRABBLE Players Dictionary, Third Edition during lunch. Who are they? The next generation of SCRABBLE® game players! Since 1992, almost 15,000 schools have purchased the School SCRABBLE® kit offered by Hasbro, and now a half million kids are playing the SCRABBLE® game in schools. The National School SCRABBLE® Club launches in February with a classroom membership including a membership brochure and teacher's shopping guide, Cool Words to Know reproducible tip sheet, official membership sticker and quarterly School SCRABBLE® newsletters for both teachers and students.
According to NSA Executive Director John D. Williams, Jr., "The School SCRABBLE® Program has been expanding on its own since it's inception. Now the interest level in using the game as a teaching tool has become enormous. It's also time for the tournament structure to be formalized so it can grow, and National School SCRABBLE® Club will play a big part in making that happen."
To address those requests, the teacher's edition will include a classroom activities section written by National School SCRABBLE® Club educational consultant and NSA member Christine Economos. It will also feature stories about how educators use the SCRABBLE® game and provide readers with a forum to share their ideas. Each membership includes 30 student editions created to challenge and inspire kids who play the SCRABBLE® game in schools.
