SOFTWARE ENGINEER FROM ATLANTA LEADS PACK OF WORD WIZARDS AT NATIONAL SCRABBLE® CHAMPIONSHIP

SAN DIEGO, CA. Proving he has a way with words, former National Champion Robert Felt, a 49-year-old computer programmer from Atlanta, Georgia, tops the list of SCRABBLE® experts competing for the $25,000 first prize at the largest National SCRABBLE® Championship in history. Over 700 SCRABBLE® enthusiasts are going head-to-head at the San Diego Concourse, vying for a total prize package of almost $90,000. Players ages 11-92 from 40 states and 8 countries are competing in a total of 31 rounds. Only one will be crowned the National SCRABBLE® Champion and earn bragging rights among North America's 10,000 tournament players.

After 13 intense rounds in two days, Felt finished with an 11-2 record and +1258 point spread lead. He is followed by former World Champion Joel Sherman, 40, from the Bronx, New York, (11-2, +1023) and 35 year-old Nigel Richards of Malaysia (11-2, +1005).

Unusual words played today include: ZEBU (an Asian ox), QOPH (a Hebrew letter), WINZE (steeply inclined mine shaft) and CWM (a deep-walled basin).

NSC play continues with 7 rounds daily Tuesday and Wednesday and the final three games Thursday morning, August 22. Live Internet coverage with standings, photos and color commentary is featured on www.scrabbleassociation.com.
