NEW YORKER HAS THE FINAL WORD AND WINS $25,000 AT NATIONAL SCRABBLE® CHAMPIONSHIP

SAN DIEGO, CA -- The word is out. Joel Sherman, a 40 year-old professional SCRABBLE® player from the Bronx, NY, spelled his way into first place at the National SCRABBLE® Championship (NSC). Sherman, a former World Champion, won $25,000 and bragging rights among America's 10,000 SCRABBLE® tournament players.

Sherman finished 25-6, +2020 playing words like VUG (a small cavity in a rock), HELICOID (type of geometrical surface) and MU (a Greek letter). Runner-up Nigel Richards, 35, of Malaysia finished 22-9, +1633 to win $10,000 and Jakkrit Klaphajone, 32, of Thailand (21-10, + 1237) takes home the $5,000 third prize. Reigning World Champion Brian Cappelletto, a 32-year old options trader from Chicago and former National Champion, won the $2,500 fourth prize finishing 21-10, +407.

Over 700 word wizards from 40 states and 8 countries have been going head-to-head since Sunday at the largest NSC in history. Competitors ages 11-92 vied for a total prize package of $90,000. Some other unusual words played today include: ADZE (a cutting tool), XI (Vietnamese money), THEIN (caffeine) and QIVIUT (wool of a musk-ox).
