Registration opens for first-ever National School SCRABBLE® Championship

GREENPORT, NY - From Harvard to legendary educator Horace Mann, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has always been a leader when it comes to learning. On April 26, 2003, the tradition continues when over 100 middle school students from around the country will compete in the premier National School SCRABBLE® Championship at the Marriott Copley in Boston.

Developed in 1991, the School SCRABBLE® Program has earned praise from educators who cite improved vocabulary, spelling, dictionary skills, traditional and non-traditional math, creativity, critical thinking and cooperative learning among i ts benefits. Currently, over a million students participate in more than 20,000 schools nationwide, and kids have been competing in local, state and regional championships since the mid-1990s.

HOW TO REGISTER

Registration is via the Internet only and is open Monday, October 28, 2002 at 9 AM EST through Monday, November 11, 2002 at 5 PM EST. Applications sent via regular mail will not be accepted. Participation status will be confirmed on Thursday, November 14, 2002.

Log onto www.scrabbleassociation.com/schools. Read the requirements. An adult (administrator, teacher, parent volunteer) must register on behalf of a school and submit the completed form electronically with $100 registration fee.

ELIGIBILITY & PROCEDURE

Each state is allotted two (2) two-member team slots that will be filled on a fi rst-come, first-served basis. Each team will represent its school. Students participating must be in grades 5 8. They must not have reached their 16th birthday on or before the date of the National Championship (April 26, 2003 ). Mixed grade teams are welcome. There are no age or grade divisions. If two (2) state slots have been filled, other schools in that state will be pla ced on a waiting list. Spots not secured by the deadline will be given to teams on the waiting list based on the order that they registered.
