WSC 2003 Announcement

March 10, 2003

The National SCRABBLE® Association (NSA) has received an announcement today from Hasbro explaining that they will no longer underwrite expenses for North American teams that participate in international competitions. After conversations with company executives, we understand that this decision is final.

The following is the company's statement:

"Hasbro's rights to market and sell SCRABBLE® are limited to the United States and Canada. To that end, the company has decided to focus its marketing efforts on those countries and will no longer underwrite any North American teams or individuals participating in international competitions. This decision is effective immediately.

We will instead focus our efforts on marketing, promoting and publicizing the game in the United States and Canada through our support of the North American-based tournaments and programs run by the National SCRABBLE® Association."

It goes without saying that the NSA is disappointed in this decision. However, we understand the company's reasoning and will honor it. According to organizers of the 2003 World SCRABBLE® Championship (WSC), no other country will have its team subsidized by any game manufacturer.

The NSA will still select an official team to the WSC 2003, using the same criteria as previously outlined. If some team members are unable to attend because of finances, we will simply "go down the list" to the next eligible and available player.

The NSA is also in discussion with Hasbro about the possibility of a premier invitational tournament to take place in the U.S. in late spring or early summer, primarily for those players selected as WSC team members. Details will be announced as they develop.

Should any player wish to communicate with Hasbro on this, contact Mark Morris. His e-mail address is mmorris@hasbro.com.

All we ask is that when you mean SCRABBLE® Brand Crossword Game, you say so.
