Back to School SCRABBLE®
Educators and parents have been asking us for more School SCRABBLE® activities. Here they are! Every two weeks, a new page will be posted. We welcome your questions and suggestions. Send them to Cindy McCaffery.
Suffixes
January 15-26, 2001
Suffixes are letter groups that, when added to the end of a word or word root, change the meaning of the word. Write the following suffixes on the chalkboard and ask students to define the meaning of each.
-like (relating to) -less (without) -ful (full of)
Present students with the following words. Ask them how the addition of the suffix changes the meaning of each word.

backless |
![]() ![]() ![]() |
Challenge students to come up with their words that contain these suffixes. Remind students to look for these suffixes when they play the SCRABBLE®game. They can make their own words using the suffix or add the suffix to a word already on the game board.
