School SCRABBLE® Activities: Issue #20

Educators and parents have been asking us for more School SCRABBLE® activities. Here they are! Every two weeks, a new page will be posted. We welcome your questions and suggestions. Send them to Cindy McCaffery.

The Compound Word Game

June 18-29, 2001

Here's a fun game you can play with your family.

[PIG+PEN=PIGPEN spelled out in tiles]

  • Place all the SCRABBLE® tiles face up in the center of the table.
  • Remove the two blanks.
  • The first player picks 3 to 4 letter tiles and makes a word. The word is placed in front of the player, so that other players can read it. Note: If no words can be made with the 3-4 tiles chosen, the player may draw another tile and attempt to make a 3-4 letter word.
  • Each player, in turn, picks 3-4 tiles and makes a word.
  • Play continues in this manner until no more words can be made.
  • Player #1 tries to make a compound word using one of his words and an opponent's word. (For example, suppose Player #1 has the word PIG and sees that an opponent has the word PEN. Player #1 can take PEN to make PIGPEN.)
  • Then, it's Player #2's turn. Play continues until no more words can be made.
  • The player who has the most words at the end of the game wins.

Note: If, at any time, a player thinks that a compound word is not a real word, they may challenge it. (We suggest the Official SCRABBLE® Players Dictionary, Third Edition as the word source.) If the word is not real, the player who made the word, returns the word and loses his or her turn. If the word is a good word, the player who made the challenge loses his or her next turn.
